Our Story
Seven Canyons Advisors, formed in 2017, was over 45 years in the making. Sam Stewart, one of our founders, was the visionary that founded Wasatch Advisors and helped build the global small-cap investor into a $17B firm. Sam believed that even a normally efficient market occasionally presents opportunities for exceptional returns. He wanted to prove that deep due diligence can unearth such inefficiencies. When Sam left Wasatch to join his sons Josh Stewart and Spencer Stewart in launching Seven Canyons Advisors (SCA), the philosophy and process of finding global small-cap opportunities remained the same.
Seven Canyons is founded upon the conviction that the key to success in small-cap investing is having a small and elite team managing limited AUM. We believe there is a tipping point where growth in team and AUM size becomes an impediment to successful investing in true small and micro-cap stocks.
At SCA, we aim to discover and own great companies before other fund managers. Screening is the backbone of our discovery process. When a company screens well, we practice traditional bottom-up deep due diligence. We visit companies onsite, dissect their financials, build earnings models, and carefully monitor our companies. We build relationships with management teams early, when they most value us as a partner, and remain in close contact with management for the duration of our investment.
Our investment team at Seven Canyons has just five members: Spencer Stewart, a former PM at Grandeur Peak; Andrey Kutuzov, a former PM at Wasatch Advisors; Justin Bodily, previously a Goldman Sachs analyst; Tuan Luong, a former analyst for Thrivent and Goldman Sachs; and Matt Harris.
